Need a bit of an extra kick to get motivated? Here’s a round up of the top charity runs to get the whole family moving.

Sometimes you need a extra little bit of motivation, a what better than training for a charity event? Here are the top 4 charity runs to watch out for, with something for all the family.

Sport Relief Mile

What is it? Biannual charity event for the Comic Relief charity, which raise money for poor and disadvantaged people in the UK and abroad. Participants can complete the mile by running, walking, jogging, bouncing, wheeling or any other form of movement!

Who can take part? Anyone of any age. It’s only a mile so the whole family can get involved.

When is it? The next Sports Relief is in 2012, but keep an eye out for Red Nose Day next year.



Race for Life

What is it? Cancer Research UK’s flagship fundraising event, with participants walking, running or jogging 5k to raise money to fund cancer research.

Who can take part? Women of all ages and fitness levels.

When is it? There are over 230 events between May and July. Check out www.raceforlife.org for more details.

Great North Run

What is it? The world’s largest half-marathon taking place between Newcastle upon Tyne and South Shields.  Around 50,000 take part every year, with many running for charity.

Who can take part? Anyone can apply for the ballot, but thousands are unsuccessful. There are several “Great Runs” including Junior and Mini events on the website at www.greatrun.org

When is it? The 2010 marathon is on 19th September, but there are other Great Runs throughout the year.

London Marathon

What is it? A road marathon, which has a huge number of charity runners, often in fancy dress, who are sponsored to complete the run.

Who can take part? If you want to run the marathon, anyone can apply for the ballot, but tens of thousands are unsuccessful every year due to number restrictions. You may also be able to get in by running for a charity, or having run a fast marathon time.

When is it? It happens every year, with the 2010 marathon on the 25th April. The 2010 ballot is closed, but if you want a chance for 2011, the key is to apply early.  For more info, check out http://www.virginlondonmarathon.com
