Cognitive Biases: The Mind’s Hidden Filters
Ever felt certain you were right, only to later realise you’d missed something obvious? That’s cognitive bias at work. These hidden mental filters shape how we view the world and make decisions, often without us noticing. Our brains love shortcuts, especially when quick judgements are needed, and cognitive biases are the shortcuts they take.
Take confirmation bias, for instance. It’s our tendency to seek or interpret information in ways that reinforce what we already believe, making us overlook alternative perspectives. While these biases might seem trivial, they can impact decision-making in our personal and professional lives, leading us to choices we might regret.
The good news? Once you’re aware of these mental filters, you can start recognising and challenging them. By being mindful of how biases shape our thinking, we open ourselves up to a broader perspective, allowing for more informed decisions.
Cognitive biases are part of being human, but recognising them is the first step toward clearer thinking. By questioning our assumptions and embracing new information, we can break free from mental traps and make wiser, more balanced choices.
As Mr M says, “Every day is an opportunity to learn something new.” So, let’s take that chance and think a little more openly!
