I’ll Do It Later: The Power of Procrastination
We’ve all been there- putting off tasks until the last minute, even though we know it’s not ideal. But why do we procrastinate? Is it simply laziness, or is there more to it? Turns out, procrastination is deeply rooted in our brains and has more to do with emotions than motivation. Procrastination is often a result of emotional avoidance. When we face a task that feels overwhelming, boring, or stressful, our brain tries to protect us by steering us away from discomfort. Instead of tackling the task, we seek instant gratification from something more enjoyable, like scrolling through social media or watching videos. Psychologists call this “time inconsistency,” where our brain favours short-term rewards over long-term gains. Interestingly, procrastinators often feel worse after delaying tasks, yet the cycle repeats.
However, breaking free from procrastination doesn’t have to be daunting. Techniques like the “2-minute rule” (where you commit to a task for just two minutes) or “temptation bundling” (pairing a fun activity with a task) can trick the brain into action. These small shifts help reduce the emotional weight of tasks, making them easier to tackle.
As Mr M often says, “Get the body you want tomorrow, today!”—the same principle applies to procrastination. It’s not about being lazy; it’s about managing emotions. By understanding why we delay, we can make simple changes to overcome it. So next time you catch yourself procrastinating, remember it’s just your brain trying to avoid discomfort. Take a small step, and the rest will follow!
